Why is anime so popular among adults? As an anime fan have you ever asked yourself that question?
Have people asked you that and you didn’t have a good answer to give?
Well don’t worry, because, in this post, I’ll be giving 4 fantastic reasons why adults enjoy watching anime.
Reason 1 – Adult theme with animation
We all loved cartoons growing up. I’m sure you remember watching shows like Tom & Jerry, Spiderman, Batman, Power Rangers and things along those lines.
as we matured, we found ourselves craving much more than what cartoons could offer.
So we started watching shows like Family Guy, Regular Show, American Dad and animations along those lines.
But these shows were just filled with relentless jokes. Nothing intellectually satisfying.
In comes anime…
Anime was an entirely new world. It joined people’s love for animation and the love of deep stories that satisfied our intellect.
Take a show like Death Note, it’s like a chess game. For many people, this show had them on the edge of their seats. Trying to figure out what was going to happen next.
It’s not a fighting/action type of show. There are a few shooting scenes here and there but the majority is talking.
And it’s so enjoyable!
If you’re looking for a show with a combination of fighting and strategy, check out Code Geass.
In Code Geass, you follow a character named Lelouch. He’s trying to overthrow an empire where his father is the emperor and he’s the prince.
Lelouch has a special power called Geass. This enables him to command anyone to obey his command. But there are rulings and sacrifices that comes with the Geass.
Lelouch is a master chess genius and shows it in real life by commanding a little army of mechs to take down the empire.
Overall, Code Geass is an emotional roller coaster and not for the faint of heart.
You don’t find these types of animation in the West. It’s probably because animation wasn’t intended for children in the first place.
Animation became geared towards children when people discovered there was a lot of money to be made in it.
Japan, on the other hand, decided to stick to their roots and geared most of their animation to mature audiences.
Reason 2 – Animation
Some people just don’t grow out of animation. It’s more enjoyable to them than live action shows. Personally, I’m not a fan at all of live action shows.
You see, with animation there are no restrictions.
You don’t have to fly actors out of the country and into Brazil to do a shot. You don’t have to use a green screen in order to get the effects you want.
If you can draw it, you can create it, hence there’s no limit to what you can do with animation.
Reason 3 – Story
After watching countless Japanese animations and Western animation, I realised the Japanese went a lot deeper with their stories and weren’t afraid of doing crazy things…
…you see, your typical western animation’s story is very linear. There are certainly twists and turns but the Japanese are much more abundant in this practice.
Berserk is a perfect example of this.
Berserk is a very dark anime where the main character, Guts was betrayed. Now you’re probably thinking, great he was betrayed, Western shows also have elements of betrayal.
The only thing I can say to you is, trust me… you’ve never seen a betrayal like this.
Japanese animation allows the combination of the animation and a deep story to combine. This isn’t something that’s common amongst Western animations.
It’s the reason why so many adults flock to anime.
Reason 4 – Japanese culture
At first, you wouldn’t think Japanese culture is a major reason why adults would like anime. And at first, people don’t pay much attention to the Japanese culture.
However, as time goes on, their culture and overall way of life grows on you. You take a liking to it and sometimes find yourself wanting to visit Japan.
You see, no matter which anime you watch, it’s filled with Japanese culture. The most obvious piece of their culture is their language, obviously.
In anime, you realise certain phrases are constantly being used. Words like Baka (idiot) and Nani (What?).
When you watch a Japanese animation that’s based on Western lore, you often find character eating a bowl full of ramen noodles.
The culture is everywhere and we find ourselves coming back for exactly that.
Anime is popular among adults because it fills a void. The void of wanting a mature show that’s entirely animated.
